What an awesome weekend up at the lake! My husband, Mike, and I got to spend tons of quality time together and as a bonus we got to hang out with my parents a little too. (They are the best!) Year three has begun and like I said in my last post, it’s sure to be a good one. We had our first boat ride of the season. In my book that means summer is officially here …whoohoo!
Mike and I went to Church Landing in Meredith, NH for dinner on Sat night. (This is where we had our amazing wedding ceremony and reception 2 years ago.) We went over early and sat at the bar for a drink and then had a really great dinner. Mike even pulled out the romance card this weekend (hadn’t seen it in awhile). He called our cake lady and had her make a mini version of our wedding cake. She dropped it off at the restaurant and our waiter brought it over for dessert. It was really cute…and let’s be honest, really delicious too.
Enough on the romance…but yes, I had my cake and ate it too. Along with some pizza and a few other things I won’t even mention. BUT…I did fit in 2 kettlebell workouts. 🙂 And this morning I went to the gym and it’s back to eating right.
It took me a long time and a lot of learning to figure out how to ‘eat right’. Eventually I got tired of having all different sizes in my closet and feeling tired and run down most of the time. I’m still learning, but I know I have come really far and I am excited to help others make positive changes in their nutrition habits.
My overall belief on proper nutrition is that in order to succeed you absolutely must create a lifestyle change instead of “going on a diet.” There are always ends to diets …mainly because most diets are not created as a way that you can successfully eat forever.
I think so many people (not to stereotype, but especially women) struggle with yo-yo dieting and I completely understand why. If you deprive yourself of something for long enough you’ll eventually give in. The more you tell your body no, the more you’ll crave whatever it is you ‘can’t’ have. Eventually you eat what you told yourself you wouldn’t and then comes the guilt…and you’re back to square one. Boo hoo.
Instead, try something more realistic. You can eat everything in moderation. Think about eating healthy foods 90% of the time and then you can eat whatever you want 10% of the time. Good news! Most of you are probably not eating enough on a regular basis. You should be eating 5-6 smaller meals a day to keep that metabolism going.
Here’s some tips to get you thinking and in the next few blogs I’ll get more specific.
- Eat 5-6 meals a day.
- Try to incorporate lean protein with each meal or snack.
- When you mess up, don’t beat yourself up or skip meals, just pick up with a healthy meal next.
- Got that? Don’t skip meals.
- Coffee does not count as a meal.
- Monitor food quality more than quantity (stop focusing so much on counting calories and start focusing on eating healthy, satisfying foods to fuel your body).
Happy Monday! Have a great week!
