I talk about excuses a lot. I don’t like them, but I hear a lot of them, sometimes even from myself. 😉
You probably already know that when it comes to training and taking care of your body, I think it’s all about making time, not excuses.
I’ve also talked about the worst excuse, which is one I hear often when I invite friends to come check out our gym. Enough said on that one…read the other post to find out why you do not need to be in shape to go to the gym.
Now, onto today’s topic…the one excuse I keep hearing that’s really starting to get me fired up.
“It’s not Monday so I can’t start working out or eating healthy today. I’ll have to wait until next week to get started.”
…Yah, I thought you might know that one. You sleep through your alarm on a Monday and miss a workout or head out to a fast food lunch on a Tuesday. The week is shot and you decide to give up for the next 5 or 6 days and start fresh next Monday. You’ll be more successful that way, right?
WRONG.
First of all, you can actually make some decent progress in 5 or 6 days, even if it’s just changing one small habit. Instead, by telling yourself that you’ll start fresh later {again} you’re putting off your commitment and, whether you like it or not, you’re making the decision that you’re not serious about working towards your health and fitness goals yet. Heck, you’ll probably even convince yourself that you should load up on all the junk food you can right now because next week you’re going to get down to business.
What happens when something comes up next Monday too? You’re stuck in a late meeting and you order pizza with coworkers. The following Monday your son is sick and you are forced to spend most of the day on the couch. Pretty soon it’s been a month, a year or even 5 years and you’re still waiting for everything to line up perfectly before you start eating healthy, sleeping more or working out again.
How about you stop convincing yourself to wait until Monday and get started today? On a Wednesday. Like a boss. Get serious about your goals and stop waiting for the perfect opportunity {or likely just more imperfect opportunities} to make a change. Focus on changes you can make today, like squeezing in a quick workout at home if you don’t have time to get to the gym.
I get it. Change is hard. Working out is hard. Eating right is hard. But, I assure you it’s not going to get any easier next Monday or the Monday after that.
What are you doing TODAY that will help you along in your journey to better yourself?
