It’s summer. You’re busy. Heck, I’m busy too (see my recent lack of posting followed by last week’s catch-up post). 😉
Does being busy mean you should abandon ship? Skip your workouts and cancel your gym membership for the rest of the summer or until life slows down and you have more time?
Let’s be honest here, when does ‘more time’ ever really happen?
I’ve seen it a million times. People put their personal training sessions on hold or cancel their gym membership for summer because they have too much going on. They’re too busy for the gym. Most people even tell themselves they are going to workout on their own or engage in more outdoor physical activity during the summer. Hey, that’s perfectly fine if you’re self-motivated and truly just need a break from your strength training sessions or your personal trainer, but what I see happen most of the time when someone stops training because he or she is busy looks a lot more like this.
New moms tell me they’d love to start working out, but that I should come talk to them in 10 years when their kids are more self-sufficient. (Side note: this one really irks me… why do so many people in our society think it’s okay to stop taking care of yourself and/or having any type of life of your own when you have a child?)
Summer quitter, new mom or just regular busy person, I urge you to change your perspective on fitting in fitness when you’re busy.
Start saying no to things that don’t matter (like The Bachelorette) instead of quitting the important things (like taking care of yourself) when you’re stressed. Keep signing up for those strength training, kickboxing or yoga classes. Maybe even commit to personal training sessions with a friend for the summer so that you are more inclined to actually show up. At the very least, mark your workouts in your calendar and take those appointments with yourself seriously.
It’s August. We’re all busy with friends and family. What healthy habit are you going to make a priority this month instead of waiting until fall?
