I think I’ve mentioned our amazing church and pastor before, but we had a particularly wonderful service a week ago. My husband led the band and they nailed every song, including Zac Brown ‘Free‘ and Amazing Grace. Just awesome. If you’re interested in hearing the sermon, you can listen here about Practicing your Faith.
Our pastor started the sermon with a great story about his childhood and how much he hated brushing his teeth. So he would go into the bathroom, close the door, put toothpaste on his toothbrush and then BRUSH THE SINK (ewwww, right??). That’s how much he hated brushing his teeth. Eventually his mom caught him and although he doesn’t remember exactly what she said it was something to the point of, if you’re going to go through all of that effort, why wouldn’t you just put the toothbrush in your mouth and brush? Eventually, after several trips to the dentist, he figured out that he either had to actually brush his teeth instead of the sink or he’d have to deal with drills
and needles later.
In this example, he knew that he had to brush his teeth, and got ‘almost’ all the way there, but didn’t follow through all the way by actually putting the toothbrush in his mouth. 🙂
Now, it seems logical to all of us that brushing your teeth is much less of an ‘evil’ than having to get cavities filled, etc. But what about avoiding fatty fried foods and high-sugar foods so that you decrease your risk of diabetes, obesity, cancer, and more?
Do you sometimes get dressed, go to the gym (or go outside) and walk lazily on the treadmill/street and then count that as your exercise for the week? In that case you probably know what you should do and you got almost all the way there.
Remember when I wrote about Knowledge being Power, but not Everything? Sometimes you know what you have to do or what you should do, but you just don’t do it. Unless you take action you are not going to get results.
Practicing your faith, working out and eating right all are really quite simple. But simple does not mean EASY. You have to work at all of these things constantly and never stop practicing.
