You guys!!!! I am blown away by all of the support on my last post announcing the arrival of Baby Perry in June 2015. Thank you for all of the love…this baby is feeling it already.
I’ve gotten a lot of questions over the last few days so I’ll answer a few common questions about what the first trimester has been like for me so far, when the baby is due and what you can expect over the next several months on the blog.
How far along are you?
I’m 13 weeks today! I’m due June 17th, but I’m predicting a little earlier than that. We’ll see! Connor was born June 4th so we apparently love our June babies.
Are you showing sooner with this pregnancy than with your first?
Ummm, yah. I feel like I’m about 20 weeks. I felt relieved announcing my pregnancy the other day because clients were starting to notice that I was hiding under sweatshirts 99% of the time. Okay, maybe more like 100% at work. I was so thankful our new SOS sweatshirts came in just in time!
Anyone who saw me during non-sweatshirt time (really just during workouts) either knew or must have thought I got a boob job and have really been living it up this holiday season.
When did you first realize that you were pregnant?
I was eating an egg quesadilla, the same thing I eat nearly every day for lunch. All of a sudden it did NOT taste good. I literally just about ran upstairs because I knew immediately, which was funny because before that I really thought I was not pregnant.
What were some of the earliest signs of pregnancy?
After I found out, a few things clicked that had happened during the weeks before, but most of my symptoms started right around then when I was about 5 weeks pregnant.
Exhaustion like no other exhaustion. I took naps (which is SO weird for me) when possible and bed time was basically whenever Connor went to bed.
Sore and big boobs. Ouch. (Still growing and hurting.)
Weird cravings and cravings that changed daily. One day I was dying for Sour Patch Kids…the next day they sounded disgusting. Eggs (scrambled and hard boiled) were hit or miss depending on the day. Same with guacamole and hummus. Veggies and chicken were both on the outs for a few weeks. I forced them down some days, but it was difficult. Starchy carbs have pretty much been on the “yes” list all the way through. Cheese has been on the “yes” list. Oatmeal and protein shakes have been on the “yes” list. Things are calming down and back to normal for the most part, but I’m HUNGRY now. Coffee was out, but finally made a comeback and makes my mornings so lovely again.
Metallic taste. All the time. Eww.
Increased sense of smell. I couldn’t really work at coffee shops because everything they made seemed to smell disgusting.
Lack of focus and motivation. With training, work, everything! It made me feel kind of depressed because I just couldn’t get it together. Feeling much more like myself the past few weeks with just a few bad days here and there.
Snoring. Poor husband.
Trouble sleeping. I wake up a few times a week and my mind is racing or I’m starving.
Easily winded. Like when going up stairs. Seriously.
Why did you choose this week to announce your pregnancy?
It was getting really tough to hide my stomach at work. As mentioned above, I have been hiding under sweatshirts, but could tell people were noticing. I’m not usually one to hide behind clothes and honestly I usually feel better in something more form fitting so it was getting a little old and I was feeling really frumpy.
Some close friends and family have known for a few weeks. We also told our employees because I was seriously having a hard time stringing sentences together on a few days.
How are your workouts going?
My workouts are getting better now, but I was struggling for a few months.
Remember for a few weeks I was talking about the winter training funk and how I was combating said funk with shorter workouts?
Well, yes, I usually do experience a bit of a training funk during this time of year, but I also had another reason this year. The first trimester of pregnancy pretty much knocked me on my butt. I am proud of myself that I actually kept up training about 5 days a week or so for the whole time even though I felt terrible. Just moving in some way shape or form made me feel better as long as I did just enough, not too much.
Now that I’m almost in my second trimester, I’m getting to the point where I feel like I can push myself a bit more again, my workouts don’t have to be so short (although most still are) and I can use a somewhat heavier weights again. I’m doing a lot of pullups, overhead presses, deadlifts and squats right now for strength training. For conditioning I’m doing a little of everything including lots of kettlebell swings and kettlebell snatches.
Just like during my last pregnancy, I’m listening to my body and doing exercises that feel good…and avoiding exercises that don’t feel good. Not much running (okay, none) or jumping going on. It just doesn’t feel good to me right now.
Are you finding out the sex?
Heck yes.
Does Connor understand?
Pretty much. He said he wants “the same as him”…a brother. I’m prepping him to be my awesome helper. I’m so excited to see him as a big brother!!
Are you going to talk about your pregnancy on the blog?
Yes. For a few reasons. One, part of the reason I keep this blog going is for my own reference. It’s a bit of a journal on where I’m at in life. Two, pregnancy is interesting and it’s tough to find real, trustworthy information out there…especially when it comes to training during pregnancy.
I promise not all my posts will be related to pregnancy, but I do hope to share some good (REAL) information on signs and symptoms of pregnancy as well as training during each trimester of pregnancy. I am not planning to share monthly bump updates or anything that organized…that would just stress me out. 🙂
I’d love to hear from you! If there’s anything you want to hear more about to improve your own knowledge or to improve your knowledge because you train pregnant women, just ask! I’d love to help.
